Financial Services Review | Thursday, May 26, 2022
For the fintech industry, 2022 is set to be a big year as this sector managed to prevail over the rise above the challenges.
FREMONT CA:The year 2022 will be a game-changer for embedded finance, which refers to the act of firms, usually non-financial ones, integrating financial goods or services into their current business. For example, a bicycle retailer may see bike sales as its primary source of revenue, but it may augment this by offering bicycle insurance products.
Initially, fintech firms increasingly focused on providing services accessed via APIs. An API is a piece of code that allows two apps to communicate. In practice, this allows businesses to simply incorporate features such as payments, credit, and insurance into current applications or services that their customers already use. The second factor is the extraordinary digitalization in recent years, which means that there are now many more enterprises with a solid digital platform on which they may bolt-on financial goods or services. Considering the necessity for businesses to develop new revenue streams in the aftermath of economic disruption, it is easy to see why embedded finance is so appealing.

Companies from fintech subsectors such as insurtech and wealth tech have burst out of the gate, which can be called the great unbundling - niche providers delivering a single, specialized service in insurance or wealth management and not doing much else. That logic is increasingly being reversed. In consequence, the great unbundling has given way to the big re-bundling. Now, those same specialists are beginning to diversify their offerings, such as wealth-techs that earned consumers a core pitch and are now offering additional banking services. Some advanced industry observers believe that the future of financial services belongs with organizations that can best curate a range of very high-quality services and APIs and deliver them to customers – not necessarily with companies that produce exclusive services.
