Growing Through Trusted Partnerships

Stan Smith is Chief Growth Officer at 401GO, where he leads growth initiatives across payroll, HCM and financial advisor partnerships. He focuses on strengthening strategic relationships, expanding partner ecosystems and helping organizations deliver accessible retirement solutions. Guided by a relationship-first leadership philosophy, Smith combines data-driven decision-making with collaboration, accountability and a clear sense of purpose to drive sustainable growth.
Trust Is Strategy
My role as Chief Growth Officer centers on two distinct partner ecosystems. One includes more than 100 payroll and human capital management providers. The other spans more than 2,400 financial advisors. They serve different markets, but my objective stays the same. Earn trust every day. Strengthen relationships. Help our partners grow alongside us.
That work goes beyond transactions. Relationships deepen through consistency, responsiveness and a real commitment to what matters most to each partner. Whether we support payroll providers, benefits organizations, digital platforms or advisory firms, every conversation reinforces that trust. Trust does not arrive overnight. I treat every interaction, large or small, as a chance to earn a little more of it and that discipline is what makes growth sustainable.
The right resources make that discipline possible. Marketing support, technology enablement and strong customer service all play a part, but the human element in every interaction matters most. Technology sharpens efficiency; people build the partnership.
Know the Partner Before You Grow with Them
One of my most important responsibilities is understanding our partners' businesses from the inside out. Payroll providers, benefit administrators, digital platforms and financial advisors each operate inside complex ecosystems of their own, with different priorities. I never assume what success looks like for a partner. My job is to understand their goals and find how embedding retirement solutions into their existing offerings can help them grow.
That same principle holds inside our own walls. Strong external partnerships start with strong internal teams. Our people need the training, technology and support to succeed and when they have it, they bring more value to every partner we serve.
Where Data Meets Judgment
One lesson has stayed with me throughout my career. You cannot know where you are going without data. Dashboards, key performance indicators and success metrics give us an honest view of performance and sharpen our decisions. They show progress, surface opportunities and hold us accountable to what we promise.
“ Holding onto a long-term vision, even when daily noise pulls at your attention, has taught me to stay patient with the bigger picture. “
Numbers alone fall short. I weigh every decision through two lenses at once, quantitative insight and qualitative understanding. Data shows what is happening. The conversation explains why it is happening. This remains a relationship business, especially with strategic partners and regular check-ins, active listening and a steady pulse on the ground give us context no dashboard can capture. Bring quantitative analysis and qualitative insight together and the result is a sharper strategy, one that builds accountability on both sides of every partnership.
Culture Is Built, Not Assumed
People often frame growth around revenue, market share or expansion. To me, business has always been a team sport. Sustainable success depends on the right people, the right structure and open communication across every team. Culture does not happen on its own. We build it with intention.
Learning should never stop. We give people room to develop new skills, encourage collaboration and make space to enjoy the work itself. Hiring well matters, but developing the people already on the team matters just as much. Recognizing small wins alongside major milestones builds a culture where people feel valued, motivated and invested in shared goals.
A Purpose Bigger Than the Balance Sheet
Every leader needs a reason that goes beyond performance. Mine is clear. More than 53 million Americans still lack a retirement account and credit card debt has climbed to an all-time high of nearly $1.04 trillion. That statistic is what gets me to work every morning. Making retirement savings simpler and more accessible gives purpose to everything we do and I want 401GO to keep closing that gap for the people who need it most.
We work to make it easier for businesses to offer retirement plans and for employees to prepare confidently for the future. Technology drives that mission, but technology alone never creates meaningful change. Real progress comes from trusted relationships, shared accountability and a genuine commitment to improving financial outcomes for the people we serve.
What I Tell Every Leader I Mentor
My advice to other leaders comes down to one idea. Never lose sight of your passion. Economic conditions will shift, customer expectations will evolve and markets will grow more competitive, but purpose gives you clarity when everything else feels uncertain. Holding onto a long-term vision, even when daily noise pulls at your attention, has taught me to stay patient with the bigger picture.
I expect more employers to embed retirement benefits directly into their payroll and HR platforms in the years ahead and that is the direction I want 401GO pushing toward. Listen actively to your customers, your partners and your own team. Stay focused on what they need, prioritize what creates the greatest value and never stop learning. Growth rarely happens alone. It comes from building strong relationships, earning trust every day and staying committed to a purpose bigger than the business itself.
